As designers we have to balance our visual and non-visual skills. The latter usually involves being able to write about our work. Design writing in this context requires a complex and sophisticated approach – a need to convince readers of your technical competence and intellectual acuity, as well as sensitivity to end-user or audience needs.
These are examples of design writing assignment in the Graduate program in Design. I had to defend my position with coherent, articulate responses that reflect both my hopes and fears for made work, and how the work fits into a larger cultural conversation. My investigations and design solutions were always accompanied by written essays.
